President Zuma today successfully launched the new PRASA trains operated by Metrorail. The new trains, affectionately known as "The People's Train" , are part of PRASA's modernisation programme, which will be implemented over the next 20 years.

Gibela Rail Transport Consortium (Gibela) has completed the first round of recruitment of full-time employees for the car body shell workshop at its new train manufacturing plant at Dunnottar in Ekurhuleni.

Construction work can now resume at Gibela Rail Transport Consortium’s (Gibela’s) R1-billion train manufacturing facility at Dunnottar.

Gibela Rail Transport Consortium said on Tuesday that it has restarted construction work at the R1bn train manufacturing facility at Dunnottar in Ekurhuleni, after a week of community unrest came to an end.

On 7 February, the first X’Trapolis Mega train, built by Gibela for PRASA, carried its first passengers on the Koedoespoort – Rissik Corridor, in Pretoria.
