Gibela celebrates Nelson Mandela’s legacy

Johannesburg, South Africa: Monday, 18 July, 2016. Some 914 learners at Umnyezane Primary School, near Nigel, are walking that little bit taller from today, in new school shoes donated by Gibela employees in recognition of Mandela Day.

A group of 20 employees of the new, Dunnottar-based train-building company also joined forces with the school’s learners and their parents, community church and NGO members today, cleaning the school and refurbishing desks.

The company initiative is based on honouring Nelson Mandela’s contribution to positive change in South Africa, as well as signalling Gibela’s commitment to local development.

Buyiswa Mncono-Liwani, Economic Development Director at Gibela, said: “Part of Mandela’s legacy is the belief that education is a powerful tool that can transform lives. By assisting in the creation of an environment conducive to learning, Gibela is not only fulfilling part of our mandate to support communities but is also contributing towards fulfilling Nelson Mandela’s vision.”

Gibela has started the construction of its South African train manufacturing facility at Dunnottar on the East Rand where 580 new passenger trains will be built for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa. Meanwhile, eight of the first 20 trains currently being built by the company in Brazil have been delivered at PRASA’s Wolmerton Depot where they are being tested and commissioned ahead of the start of commercial service of the first new modern train in October 2016.
