Gibela launches enterprise development programme

Under contract to the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) to build 600 new commuter trains for Metrorail over the next 10 years, Gibela is using the expertise of major shareholder Alstom – a leader in global rail engineering – to develop a strong, sustainable, South African supplier base to contribute to the rebirth of South Africa’s rail sector.

The company’s contractual obligations to PRASA include the purchase of raw materials and components from South African suppliers to ensure maximum local contact in its trains, and building the capacity of South African railway businesses to be globally competitive.

Gibela is specifically looking for businesses that provide sheet metalwork (cutting and bending), welded sheet metalwork, machining, cutting (insulation and air filters), and adhesive application.

By joining Gibela’s business growth programme, run by Raizcorp, successful applicants will be able to attend entrepreneurial learning sessions, have access to specialists, be assigned a team of business guides, and get product-specific technical training if needed.

Raizcorp is, according to The Economist, the only genuine incubator in Africa, which provides full service enterprise and supplier development programmes that guide entrepreneurs to profitability. Raizcorp has created “Prosperation™” – its own unique, world-renowned model of business incubation. Founded in 2000, Raizcorp has become Africa’s premier business incubator model.

To be considered for the programme, applicants must: be older than 18; be a South African citizen; have a business that is 51% or more black-owned, has been running for a minimum of six months and has a minimum monthly turnover of R10 000; be involved in the business full-time; have access to transport; and have a cell phone, computer and email address.

Application should be made to Raizcorp. SMS “Join Now” to 44332 and Raizcorp will contact applicants about their application.

About Gibela:

Gibela was formed as a consortium to replace South Africa's outdated rolling stock and will deliver 600 state-of-the art passenger trains into the South African rail network over the next 10 years. Fully empowered, Gibela is conscious of its role as a catalyst for economic development and the creation of new skills through its majority shareholder, Alstom. In a contract signed in 2013, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) assigned Gibela the task of replacing its rolling stock with new trains.

Gibela is headquartered in Johannesburg, while its manufacturing and training facility is located in Dunnottar, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng. Through the rolling stock project, Gibela will generate 1 500 direct jobs and thousands of indirect jobs through the supply chain over a 10-year period. Thousands of people – engineers, artisans, technicians, train drivers and technologists – will benefit from training and upskilling.
