Gibela makes impact locally with recruitment drive, shortlisting of SMME contracts
Johannesburg: 26 April 2017. Gibela Rail Transport Consortium (Gibela) has completed the first round of recruitment of full-time employees for the car body shell workshop at its new train manufacturing plant at Dunnottar in Ekurhuleni, successfully filling all 49 skilled and semi-skilled boilermaker and welder posts – as planned – with historically disadvantaged (HD) applicants from 13 local communities.
More than 14 000 applications were received for these and other fulltime positions for the manufacturing plant advertised during February.
Training centre learnerships, apprenticeships
All 73 first-round learnerships and apprenticeships for Gibela’s training centre at Dunnottar have also been filled with HD applicants from Ekurhuleni communities.
How Gibela advertises positions available
Gibela’s has acted swiftly to correct an sms circulated last week to the effect that job-seekers should apply at the Springs office of the Department of Labour for positions currently available at the Gibela plant.
“This sms did not come from us and its content is inaccurate,” said Talent Manager Andile Mabindisa.
“We do not advertise positions via sms either ourselves or through other parties but rather in newspaper advertisements, on our own website and job portals, and through the Department of Labour’s local offices.”
SMME business awarded to local HD suppliers
In response to advertisements last month (March 2017), some 154 local HD SMME suppliers of plastering, painting, tiling and carpentry services submitted their profiles in order to be considered for work on the plant construction currently under way at Dunnottar. From these, 77 suppliers were shortlisted to receive tender documentation for completion. Some 62 completed tenders were received by the closing date and these are now being assessed. The award of tenders to successful tenderers is expected to take place during May 2017.
Stakeholder engagement forum (SEF) relaunched
The Gibela Stakeholder Engagement Forum – which was established in August 2015 but did not gain traction – has been re-established at a two-day meeting and will meet monthly under the joint stewardship of Gibela and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality going forward.
Communication to stakeholders, following all meetings, was identified at the re-establishing meeting as an urgent priority.
Community liaison officers appointed
Following representation from local communities, four full-time community liaison officers (CLOs) have been employed by Gibela to work with the stakeholder engagement forum to improve and maintain contact with the communities.
The four CLOs – proposed by communities – are Zamokuhle Mabena from Tsakane, Humphrey Mabena from Kwathema, Vusi Ranyawa from Arla Park and Fanie Solomon Mokotong from Duduza.
One of the first tasks in which the newly appointed CLOs have been involved was the short-listing of local HD SMME supplier profiles for plastering, painting, tiling and carpentry tenders.
