Seven months since site mobilisation for the construction of its sprawling, R1 billion train manufacturing complex at Dunnottar, Gibela has made dramatic progress, together with its empowered partners.

Gibela is a new, exciting, empowered South African company, charged with building South Africa’s new commuter trains right here in South Africa, by South Africans, over the next 10 years. In doing so, Gibela will revitalise South Africa’s once proud railway industry.

Gibela gave life to its commitment to local socio-economic development this week when it launched its maths, science and English Saturday classes in communities neighbouring its Dunnottar manufacturing site, currently under construction.

The first trains delivered in the R51-billion rolling stock acquisition programme for Metrorail operations are gearing up for service, says the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA).

The internship forms part of Gibela’s young talent development programme, which will be managed through the specialised training centre being built at the green train manufacturing plant in Dunnottar.

Ekurhuleni mayor councillor Mzwandile Masina applauded Gibela’s recently launched maths, science and English project.

Emerging South African train manufacturer Gibela Rail Transport Consortium (Gibela) has kick-started an annual internship programme with the awarding of internships to 22 national diploma and university graduates.

"Gibela intends to use education and training as the cornerstone for socio-economic development whilst supporting the Government's National Development Plan," Gibela's Economic Development Director, Dr Buyiswa Mncono-Liwani said.

Some 914 learners at Umnyezane Primary School, near Nigel, are walking that little bit taller from today, in new school shoes donated by Gibela employees in recognition of Mandela Day.
